What is Internet?

Connecting the computer together with some communication, medium is called computer network. The need for computer networking is

1) Communication

2) Data sharing

3) Sharing of hardware

4) Sharing of software

There are mainly 3 types of networks:

1) Local area network (LAN)

2) Wide area network (WAN)

3) Metropolitan area network (MAN) or campus area network (CAW).

Local area network: - Connecting the computers together that area located with in a small geographical area within the kilometers is called local area network.

Ex:- The network used in offices and university computers etc.

Wide area network: - Connecting the computers which are of remote distance (1000 of kilometers) through tele communication system or satellite is called WAN.

 Ex: Public networks

WAN connects two or more Lan’s together that is a company may have its head office in one city its branch office is located at different locations of the country connect through WAN.

Metropolitan area network:- Metropolitan area network is a network is smaller than wide area network is greater than local area network. It usually covers one or two cities (less than 50 kms).

Ex: City cable network.
