Multimedia is a comprehensive term and means different
types of media. It includes a combination of text, audio, still images,
animation, video, and interactivity content forms.
Multimedia content can
be broadly divided in to two groups: linear and non- linear. Linear active
content progresses without any navigational control for the viewer (as in the
case of a cinema presentation); non-linear content , on the other hand,
supports user’s interaction to control progress(as in the case of computer
games).
Multimedia presentations
can be live or recorded. In a recorded presentation, the user can interact via
a navigation system, but in a live multimedia presentation , interaction is
possible only through the presenter or performer.
Edutainment, which
combines education with multimedia entertainment, is now emerging as a trend in
schools as well as higher education. This has made learning theories much
simpler than ever before. Moreover, visually impaired people and other
specially abled people can pursue their careers by using training programs
specially designed for them.
Engineers and
researchers use multimedia for modeling and simulation.
Software requirements for
supporting multimedia data multimedia data can include
text , pictures , audio , and video.
Text styling this
allows users to make the text more presentable. The options available include
different fonts, different font sizes , bold , italic , and various
effects(e.g., shadow).
Text searching This
enables users to quickly search for a word or phrase in a document containing a
large number of pages.
Hyper text This
supports non- sequential navigation of information. When a hyper text is
embedded in a document, it is displayed either in a different colour or in a
different font. When a user clicks on the hyper text , additional information
about the topic is displayed.
Animation creation software This allows users to create animations using
simple objects such as lines, circles, and polygons. While creating an
animation , a user selects still images and displays them at a fast speed so
that it gives an effect of motion. As an example, a doll moving across the
screen.
Animation file importing This
feature allows users to import already existing animation file in their
applications. These files must be stored in standard file formats (e.g., WAV,.
MID,.VOC, AND INS).
Recording and playback
capability this allows users to record, play, and pause an animation sequence.
Transition effects These
effects include fade-in, rotation, layering, and zoom-in. They are used to make
more interesting and realistic animations.
Text to speech recognition
program This converts a written text into its
equivalent sound.
Voice recognition software This
identifies the speaker by matching his/her voice with the records of voice in
the database.
Media centre PC most
homes use a computer for performing many activities(such as browsing the web,
sending emails, doing school assignments, downloading songs and movies,
creating CDs, or editing pictures) and a television for entertainment that
includes watching movies and shows.
